Coastal Classic – The Great Race North
If there is one race that you do this year, make it the PIC Insurance Brokers Coastal Classic. This challenging coastal race is one of the biggest of its type in the world, and it’s long marked the opening of the summer sailing season for many hundreds of Kiwi boaties. Whether you are aiming to compete for line honours, or to complete it because it’s something you’ve always wanted to do, make this your year!
The Coastal Classic is 119 nautical miles long. It starts off Devonport Wharf in Auckland, and finishes off Russell Wharf in the Bay of Islands. Described as a drag race, it can be a sprint for the fastest boats who can finish in less than six hours, or a challenging marathon for the crew on boats that take more than 24 hours to reach Russell.
