Kaikohe is a small town with rich European and Maori heritage. Its strategic position in the centre of the province of Northland, providing shopping and service facilities for an extensive farming district.
The Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail runs through Kaikohe and is half way along the trail, and the highest point. The township is a great place for overnight stays, food and services such as bike hire and shuttles.
Visit the Pioneer Village – which includes several restored historic buildings – New Zealand’s oldest courthouse, an 1875 cottage, a jail, a school and more. You’ll also see Maori artefacts, gum-digging equipment and a blacksmith’s shop.
Nearby is Te Waiariki Ngawha Springs thermal hot pools – 16 pools to choose from. Puketi and Omahuta Kauri forests are nearby for bush walks. Kaikohe is 30km from Paihia.
