Day Two

Activities

For a bit of culture with a twist, try a day cruise from Russell on the Tall Ship R. Tucker Thompson. Built in the 1970s utilising modern materials, the ship design is based on the 19th century Halibut schooners of the North West American coast.

Day Three

Activities

Be sure to check out the Pompallier Mission and Printery in Russell. Among New Zealand’s best heritage tours, the guides will take you through each step of printing and book-binding as it was done by courageous French missionaries living in this tiny outpost.

Then take the short drive to Kerikeri and explore the highly regarded Kerikeri Mission Station for another taste of early settler life. The collection of artefacts includes a large library, mostly relating to the Church Missionary Society. However it also contains a significant number of recipe books.

Day Four

Activities

Drive half an hour north to tiny Mangonui in Doubtless Bay and take the leisurely Heritage Trail.

Beginning and ending at the historic Mangonui Courthouse, the trail is dedicated to the pioneers, both Maori and European, who crossed vast oceans to make New Zealand home. You’ll love learning more about the rich Maori and European history associated with this area.

Be sure to take the St Andrews walkway and enjoy the spectacular views from the top of the hill behind Mangonui.
