Matariki Pēwhairangi Bay of Islands 2026
Celebrate the Māori New Year at Matariki Pēwhairangi Bay of Islands, a region-wide festival taking place from Friday 26 June to Sunday 12 July 2026.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the Bay of Islands, the festival brings communities together to acknowledge the reappearance of te kāhui o Matariki and Puanga in the early morning sky. Matariki is a time to remember those who have passed, celebrate the present with whānau and friends, and look ahead with hope and aspirations for the year to come.
Over more than two weeks, visitors can enjoy a diverse programme of events celebrating Māori culture, storytelling, music, food, art, and the natural beauty of Te Tai Tokerau. From Matariki dawn cruises and stargazing experiences to live performances, workshops, cultural talks, family activities, films, hākari (feasts), and community celebrations, there’s something for everyone to experience.
The festival’s Experience Matariki programme showcases cultural activities, waiata, kōrero, workshops, and whānau events, while Feast Matariki celebrates the region’s exceptional food scene through community hāngī, artisan producers, local eateries, and fine dining experiences.
Matariki Pēwhairangi is a collaboration between local iwi, businesses, tourism operators, and community organisations, inviting locals and visitors alike to come together in the spirit of manaakitanga, reflection, learning, and celebration.
